Ten minutes at home that actually work

The single most common thing parents tell us is that they cannot help because they do not read Arabic themselves. It is worth saying plainly: that is not the part that matters.

A child in their first year is not learning meaning. They are learning to turn a shape into a sound, reliably, without stopping to think. That is a motor skill, and motor skills are built by short, frequent, boring repetition — not by long sessions, and not by explanation. Which means the useful adult in the room is not the one who knows the most. It is the one who is there.

What ten minutes should contain

Do the same three things in the same order every time. The order matters more than the content, because a predictable session is one nobody has to be argued into.

1. Two minutes on something they already know. Not revision — a warm-up, so the session starts with them being right.
2. Five minutes on today’s line from the teacher. Once slowly, twice at normal pace. Stop at five minutes even if it is not perfect.
3. Three minutes of you reading to them, or them reading to a sibling. Something with no correction in it at all.

How to correct when you cannot read

You can hear far more than you think. You do not need to know that a letter is a heavy qaf to notice that it sounded different from the way the teacher said it. That is the entire job: notice the difference, and say so without naming the fault.

• “Say that one again” — no explanation, no correction. Most of the time the second attempt is right.
• If it is still wrong, leave it. Write the word down and send it to the teacher. Two wrong repetitions are better than eight.
• Never correct the same letter more than twice in one session. After that you are teaching them that practice is where they get told off.

When to fix the slot

Pick a time that is anchored to something that already happens — after Maghrib, or immediately after dinner is cleared. A slot tied to a clock gets skipped; a slot tied to an event does not, because the event reminds you. If the honest answer is that no such ten minutes exists on weekdays, do it on four days and say so, rather than planning seven and managing two.

One last thing, and it is the part parents are most surprised by: tell the teacher what happened at home. Not a report — one line. “Struggled with the third line all week.” It changes what the next class does, and it is the difference between a teacher guessing and a teacher knowing.
